Voters in Toledo, Ohio, will have only themselves to blame if an angry God wreaks havoc on the city for failing to make self-styled prophetess, evangelist and exorcist Opal Covey its mayor.
Covey, who reportedly warned of God’s wrath if she failed in her election bid, yesterday gained only a pathetic one percent of the votes and come last out of seven candidates. This, despite promising to give residents something they really, really need: a god-fearing Republican mayor who would provide them with … amusement parks.
Instead they now have a mayor named Carty Finkbeiner. Again. It’s the fourth time the folk of Toledo have elected him to the post, despite his, umm, colourful past.
Ahead of the election, a newspaper advertisement placed by an opponent stated:
76-year-old Carty Finkbeiner has a well-documented history of confrontation, intimidation, erratic behavior, and ongoing controversy.
Back in 1994, Finkbeiner was forced to apologise after suggesting that a way to resolve complaints about airport noise would be to move deaf people into the neighborhood.
But Finkbeiner’s lunacy pales in comparison to Covey’s. She explained in this report why she moved to Toledo in 1977.
God sent me here to bring the citizens out of slavery from the Democrats, they’ve been in power for 48 years. I came here to bring them out like Moses brought the slaves out from under this horrible Democrat government that we have in Toledo.
Covey was 14-years-old when she learned she was a “prophet”. And ahead of yesterday’s poll she prophesized that, on her fifth attempt at the mayoral post, she would definitely win. But, despite “putting herself out there, speaking in tongues on radio stations, talking to local newspapers, and even making the occasional national headline” she only garnered 494 votes.
Covey claims that she actually won in 2013. But the Democrats stole her votes, crediting her with 142 instead of the thousands she knows she actually received. And she has a pretty clever way of explaining her four past losses: governmental corruption. This is the same government corruption that forced her former business to close when a raid by animal cruelty investigators found hundreds of animals in her East Toledo store.
She spent 10 days in jail after she was convicted of animal cruelty charges.
After talking politics, corruption in Toledo, and miracles, Covey explained what it means to talk in tongues:
Speaking in tongues – it’s God speaking but you cannot understand what he’s saying. You have to yield yourself to that … cowya kasha baki … there was one right there.
